The History of Saint Andrews United Methodist Church
After the destruction left by the Civil War, the Methodist Episcopal Church spread expeditiously; in 1859, more than 197,000. Blacks, mostly slaves, were members of this denomination because of its condemnation of slavery. One such church was Saint James Methodist Episcopal Church, established in 1895, and located in the Waughtown Community of Forsyth County, Saint James was a small white weatherboard chapel, pastored by the Reverend L, May.
After six years of ministry to the members of Saint James, Reverend sensed the need to leave Saint James, and start a new church, most of the congregation left with him. This new church was named, "May's Chapel. May's chapel was a small cement block church May's built in Waughtown.
In 1925, May's chapel and Saint James agreed to merge, and the property of the Salem Hill Elementary School, jointly owned by the city of Winston Salem and the county of Forsyth was purchased. The school building was remodeled, and the first service was held there on November 8, 1925, with Dr. Preston J. Cook presiding. Dr. Cook was appointed by the North Carolina Conference to serve as the first pastor after the merger. Dr. Cook's pastorship ended in 1931. The new church, Saint Andrews Methodist Episcopal, was located near the Southern boundary line of Happy Hill, on Alder Street.
In 1969, under the leadership of Reverend Lemon M. Mayfield Saint Andrews merged with Oak Grove and an additional sanctuary was built, facing Mint Street. On April 30, 1972, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the new sanctuary. We entered the new sanctuary on December 8, 1973.
In 1986, under the leadership of Reverend C. E. Strickland Sr., Saint Andrews and Grace United Methodist Churches merged. Groundbreaking services for the new church building was held on July 5, 1987 and a ceremony to unveil the cornerstone of the new sanctuary was held on Sunday, March 20, 1987.

Widely respected as a pastor, scholar, theologian, educator, mentor and community advocate, Dr. Bryant has dedicated his life to proclaiming the Gospel and serving God's people.
